Fill a jar with sand.

Fill a second, identical jar with water.

Slowly pour water from second jar into the sand in the first jar.

How much water can you pour before water runs over the side of the sand-filled jar?    Answer:  When we tried this activity, about one third of the water fit into the sand-filled jar.

Since the jar was already full with sand, where did the water go?
Answer: It flowed into the tiny spaces between the grains of sand.
